I don’t know about you, but I am feeling a confident spring in my step these days. Maybe it’s the sweet smell of spring in the air or that Earth Day is just around the corner. As the days lengthen and life begins to sprout anew, this time of the year always finds me feeling hopeful and excited about the future. Whether it’s the future of the planet or our own great state of Michigan, positive change is in motion, can you feel it too?
In honor of positive change, we at the Healing Garden Journal are thrilled to bring you our Green Michigan issue. Our pages are packed full of great ways to help strengthen our environment so that we can make Michigan the best state it can be. You’ll learn about organic lawns, shopping locally, green schools and green transportation. Or how about going on a volunteer vacation? Lending a hand while visiting new destinations can, not only be adventurous but fulfilling as well.

On our cover this month, we are featuring the Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy. The SMLC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and stewardship of green spaces in Michigan’s southeast region. You’ll meet the hard working people behind the SMLC and learn that for over 20 years they have been stewards of Michigan’s native prairies, forests, wetlands, and even our farm fields. As the writer Mandy Liddle so succinctly states, “SMLC and its members believe that preserving the integrity of these lands is of utmost importance for wildlife habitat and enjoyment by future generations.” We salute the SMLC and couldn’t agree more with their mission. It is organizations such as these that are leading the way toward a Green Michigan. Just think, maybe some day people all over the globe will look to Michigan for guidance for their own green initiatives. Now that would definitely be a positive change in the right direction!
