Money

My 12-year-old daughter started babysitting this past summer.  After completing classes at our local hospital with a few of her girl friends, she was ready for her new adventure.  She was offered a job right a way by our new neighbors across the street.  Her official start time two days a week was 8 a.m.  Now mind you, when asked what she looked forward to the most starting her summer vacation, her answer was sleep.  I could tell she wrestled with the start time but she also had visions of grandeur of what this new found money could mean for her; independence, maturity, more cash to put toward her dream of someday owning a cell phone.  It only took a few moments for her to give a resounding “yes” to the offer.

As my oldest begins her journey with money, many of us have been on the money path for awhile.  Some of us successful, some of us not, some of us lost, some of us definitely finding our way.  When I think about money, I often find myself filled with questions.  Why does money hold such power over us?  When is enough money enough?  Does money really make the world go around?  Especially when times are tough, money seems to be on everyone’s mind.  Will I make it to my next paycheck? What will the future bring?  How much does a college education cost?

With these thoughts swirling in my head, I know that money also offers great healing opportunities.  With the right people behind it, money can help save the world.  Generosity starts with each one of us no matter what our income.  I think Winston Churchill said it best by saying, “You make a living by what you get.  You make a life by what you give.”

On the cover this month, we are excited to bring you two such people that embody the spirit of generosity.  Please welcome Jack and Annette Aronson, the founders and co-owners of Garden Fresh Gourmet.  The Aronson’s make a living by producing delicious home-made salsa, tortilla chips, hummus and other delectable delights but they make a life by giving from the heart to various local charities.  When this economy starts to get you down, stop and think about ways that you can give to another.  You’ll be surprised how rich you will feel!
