When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I never answered, I want to be a spiritual healer. I had other plans. My visions for my future included spacesuits, deep- sea diving gear or maybe a lab coat. I felt that people were complicated. And life is messy. And I was shy. So I decided that I needed a lot of space between me and the rest of the world.
Fast-forward to my adulthood and you’ll find me in a quiet office engaged in conversation with someone about their problems. Over the years I found my footing and learned that I enjoy helping people. I also came to terms with my dreams of outer space and the deep blue sea. They were my fantasies about escaping rather than engaging. This personal discovery was part of my own healing journey.
My healing journey began with alternatives. Traditional allopathic medicine did not fail me, but I had health challenges that couldn’t be reconciled with what it had to offer. I needed the harmonious healing that alternative or complementary medicine provided. Soon I discovered that I relied upon four principles for tackling problems. These principles helped me overcome challenges of all kinds. I value the simplicity of these principles because life gets complicated very fast and a basic plan helps ground me when I am unsure of my next step. The following are my healing guidelines.
GET INVOLVED
The first thing I did was take ownership of my body, mind and emotions. That didn’t mean I had to know how to fix everything, but I had to be aware enough to know that something needed fixing. I became the advocate for the best care, best diagnosis and best treatment plan for myself. The world we live in is one big pharmacy. There are brilliant people here who love to heal, to help and to inspire us. I found them and I asked for help.
LEARN
I learned how my magnificent body works. I roamed the aisles of the health food stores reading labels, books, and articles and asking questions. I allowed my curiosity free-reign. I made appointments with chiropractors, homeopaths, naturopaths, traditional and spiritual counselors. Immersing myself in information gave me back the power over my life that I had given away when I thought my health was someone else’s problem.
EXPAND
I gave the energy stuff a chance. We all know that everything is made up of energy. And we all know that energy vibrates. It vibrates so fast we can’t always see or hear it, but it’s there. If we give ourselves a chance, we can feel it. The other amazing thing about energy is that it changes and we can change it with our thoughts. What we think we are – we are. One of the most liberating moments I experienced was realizing that the body, mind and emotions are so intimately connected that miracles happen when all levels are healed together. Nothing brought that home more than the spiritual work I was doing alongside the chiropractic adjustments and homeopathic remedies. It was nearly impossible to ignore the spiritual reasons for my illnesses, depression and timidity.

RECONNECT
And then there is God/Spirit/All that is. To my surprise, my relationship with Spirit became the most important factor in making my life successful. I’m not talking about a religion. I’m talking about my personal relationship with something that helped me make sense of all the big questions. Why I am I here? Does anyone love me or even care that I’m struggling here? What I believe the answers to be made a difference in my perspective, the quality of my life and my ability to evolve up and out of what wasn’t working.
ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES
Alternative therapies address the body as a whole, including our energy field and our ability to maintain free-flowing energy. They take into account all aspects of our lifestyle-- mental and emotional status, outside stressors, environmental toxins, heritage and past lives and the soul’s journey. For issues of a mental, emotional and spiritual nature, consider vibrational medicine and therapies as an option. In these therapies, the vibration of a plant, mineral, animal or spiritual energy is introduced into your aura via spray, ingesting, or placing it on your skin to gently change the way you vibrate from dissonant or untruth to something harmonious with your truth. Fears and compulsions start to lift out and away. This is very beneficial when combined with traditional psychological counseling and or spiritual counseling. Some examples of vibrational medicines and therapies are Bach flower essences, homeopathy, crystal therapy, Reiki, therapeutic touch, quantum technique and spiritual counseling.
I encourage you to be innovative as you take charge of your own wellness as there are many options and the right solution for you is out there. Make a commitment to yourself to find it. You deserve it.
