A Place For My Heart

Evita Holder

There’s a place I go that’s complete perfection,

the things that grow are my private collection

I can go there with coffee straight out of bed,

in robe and slippers, curlers on my head

I don’t need any pills to help me de-stress,

this place calms me down when my life is a mess

There’s times I stay hours, I deadhead and weed,

sometimes a few minutes are all that I need

This place that I love has many great features,

beautiful music from the tiniest creatures

Cardinals, hummingbirds, finches and jays,

provide entertainment for long summer days

The choreography’s flawless, admission is free,

an awesome performance, a concert for me

Hollyhocks, roses, delphiniums, carnations,

bleeding hearts, foxgloves, daisies, impatiens

The kaleidoscope colors of zinnias so tall,

sunflowers, marigolds, blooming late into fall

Rosemary, parsley, thyme and sorrel,

oregano, marjoram, sage and bay laurel

Chervil and basil all planted by me,

chamomile, lemon balm, mint for my tea

The evenings are always a special event,

as alyssums and moonflowers release their sweet scent

It’s a spot to have dinner, perhaps share some wine,

have lunch with a friend, a fine place to dine

A coffeehouse, restaurant and bar all in one,

cookouts, games and family fun

There’s theater, music and colors galore,

year after year outside my backdoor!
