Choices - Change Your Consciousness, Change Your Life
Sue Burton-Hidalgo
Have you ever wished to see the world as someone else does? Someone who is in your eyes perhaps happier, more successful, with more chances, more choices? I’ll give an example.
This winter two of us stood at the window watching the snow fall. One of us sighed, our internal experience of the falling snow as more to shovel, more to drive through. The other smiled and laughed, tingling inside at the idea of more snowmen and snowball fights with friends. Really only one thing happened: snow fell. Two people standing, breathing the same air, the same temperature on their skin, the same sound coming to our ears, same smells, taste, sounds, and same scene before our eyes. We experienced the same event and walked away with totally different stories about our day. One of us "smelled the roses," the other experienced weariness in life.
These differences in experience come from our consciousness, our viewpoints or choices. Every moment of our life we make CHOICES. "This feels good, that feels bad. I want this, I dislike that. You are different. We are the same. I am safe. I am unsafe." How we experience life mostly comes from our unconscious - our habituation, our past. Every moment of our life, our unconscious helps us stay alive. It runs our body processes, stores our history, holds our potentials. When our unconscious isn’t helping, when our viewpoints cripple us, the unconscious can be explored.
The hold of the past shows its path in the physical tissues of our bodies. An example of such from the science of body/mind is the idea that our legs hold our viewpoints on "understanding," "moving forward," "taking a stand" and more. Traditional Chinese Medicine sees the internal organs of our body as holding emotional qualities: the lungs hold grief/inspiration, the liver - anger/transformation and so on.
As a stress management professional, specifically in the One Brain technique, I talk with people, exploring the history they have "written" for themselves. I ask if they would like to rewrite how they experience their world and guide in how this can be done.
Transformation may seem magical, yet it is something fairly easily taught to others. How that "magic" happens can be a process. The personal growth industry abounds with techniques to change our consciousness. Some techniques are grouped into the energywork field, some into bodywork, psychology, metaphysics or mysticism. A common ground for these seemingly disparate approaches is the betterment of the human condition. People wish to move to a new space internally so we can externally experience new choices. All emotions have a time and place. Some of us get stuck in certain emotions, even though almost all of us would rather be happy than be sad. Most of us would agree, on the path with more joy, the snow becomes snowmen and children at play.
