Globalization

In the Nov/Dec issue I wrote about how excited we are with the expanding  awareness that our new Simplify and Sustain section brings to the Journal.  I feel that this issue’s theme of Globalization expands this awareness even further.

While the “goodness” or “badness” of growing Globalization is under debate, there is little question, that with instant news coverage and access to information on the internet, situations and issues that used to be “over there” and easily dismissed as someone else’s problem, are now finding their way into our consciousness.

We are seeing how interconnected our global family is.  Financial, economic and ecological problems do not recognize the arbitrary boundaries that we humans have set up between countries.  The effects of issues surfacing in one country are soon felt around the world.

With the growing awareness of problems, especially those affecting the ecology of our shared planet, comes the recognition for the need of shared responsibility and shared possibilities.  It is tempting for me to think of these as problems to be solved by our governments or large activist groups.  After all, what can I, as an individual do to stop wars, end poverty or rectify ecological imbalances?

I am realizing that we are not, in fact, alone.  Just as there is energy acting as a force to create the problems, there are people around the world aware and determined to be part of the energy of the solution.  Acting alone, I can do what I can do, but blending my energy with others in a positive chain, circling the globe  - there are surely no unsolvable problems.

In my determination to be part of the solution, I’m seeing that there are seemingly small things I can do in my everyday world to add to the energy of positive change.

I can stay aware that giving free reign to my thoughts of anger, aggression or blame, I am contributing to the energy of war.  Giving in to worry or fears of “lack”, I am adding to the burden of poverty.  Believing that just one more piece of paper or one more plastic glass in the landfill won’t make a difference, I am intensifying the problem of pollution.

In my determination to walk gently upon the earth, with care not to waste any of her precious resources – I am part of the solution.

The more I think about it, my day is filled to the brim with opportunities to join energetic hands with all those around the world, determined to make a difference.

I can’t think of any cause more worthy or hands with which I’d rather connect!
