River Run

By Colleen Ryan

The river run has just begun
I turn my face into the sun.

As I dip my paddle and begin to move
The water sparkles like a million jewels

Cattails and lilies vie for space
Unimpressed by the human race

A blackbird sings his song so sweet
While frogs are croaking to a deeper beat.

Mother duck is on alert
Her babies bob beyond her skirt

The trees close in their dark green stance
A waterbug plays his waterdance

An otter skims the river edge
A silent observer of solace pledged

I do not want this trip to end
The river rhythm has become a friend
