Meditation for Children
By Aluna Michaels, M.A.
While it is abundantly clear that all children possess an active and vivid imagination, have you ever considered the correlation between imagination and intuition? Your child has the natural ability to connect with a reliable interior wisdom that can become a wonderful foundation for her life!
To begin with, help your child choose an image to which she is drawn that inspires trust and confidence. Perhaps this symbol could be a cat, a butterfly or a unicorn. Maybe she will select a superhero, an angel, or even a deceased relative with whom she had a powerful bond. Teach her that her special “spiritual friend” is always there for her, and can provide her with the best solutions to her problems.
Next, help her to visualize a relaxing place where she feels comfortable and safe—a private hiding place in her room, a favorite swing set, Grandma’s kitchen, wherever she likes.
You and your child don’t need to meditate for long periods of time. Keep it short and simple. Sit together with closed eyes. Speak in a relaxed manner and let your child know she can go to her “private power place” in her mind.
Encourage her to imagine her “spiritual friend” waiting there. Suggest that your child ask the helper what to do about a problem, and to imagine what that answer would be. Then discuss her revelations together.
The more you support her inner wisdom, the stronger and clearer the voice of your child’s intuition will become.
Urge her to use intuitive talents before she tackles a difficult homework assignment, the night before she tries out for a sports team or school play, or after she has had a disagreement with a friend.
In each instance, let her know that even if she doesn’t receive a specific message, her “spirit friend” will be guiding her by helping her to say the right thing, or be in the right place at the right time.
Remind her that she can “tune in” easily any time she needs to by closing her eyes, taking a deep breath and imagining her special meditation place. Her safe inner world and trusted comrade are available to her in spite of any outer circumstances she encounters.
Your personal meditation practice can help you discern your child’s inner messages. You will be able to lovingly interpret her ideas so they are optimally helpful—yet be very careful not to invalidate the original concept (a tricky task!).
Please use meditation techniques when you and your child are arguing. Say, “OK, let’s stop talking right now and meditate for a minute or two.” It is important for her to know that you get off-kilter too, and that you often need to reconnect with your own inner source!
After taking time in meditation, either together or in separate rooms, come back to the conversation and listen with an open heart.
Meditation will help your child build incredible confidence and self-esteem. She will know she has plenty of support from the outside, by means of parents and teachers, and that she is equally supported from the inside, thanks to her dependable intuition!
