Let’s Get Spiritual!
by Tess Marshall
I have noticed that most people get more opinionated as November and Election Day draw near. Neighbors are putting signs in their yards revealing who they want to be President. The local newspaper’s editorial page is filled with who is best and why. We make one candidate right and the other wrong. It is easy to get caught up in the fear and mud slinging. My plan is to be my best spiritual self during this time and I invite you to do the same.
Be nonjudgmental.
There is no need to place blame and become angry. Instead focus on what is good about President Bush and John Kerry. If you are reading this magazine, you believe there is good in everyone. This is your chance to practice what you preach. Remember we are all one! Remember both are here to be our mirrors and to help us heal our wounds. It’s a good time to practice “Impeccable Word,” as Don Miguel Ruiz advises us to in The 4 Agreements.
Pray.
When things become difficult, pray and ask for guidance. Pray for health, happiness and peace for people of all nations. Prayer will keep you poised and calm. Hold on to your faith. Ask if there is any action you need to take. You may be guided to go to campaign headquarters and answer phones or to make a monetary donation. My friend Barry told me he is going to donate as much time as he possibly can. Send silent blessings to both candidates. Be willing to channel your strong emotions by doing something positive. You won’t feel so powerless.
Let Go and Let God.
When you see injustice, place the world and concerns you have in God’s care and keeping. God works unceasingly through all of us to establish justice, order, and harmony. Often we get caught up in our egos and want to make things right. That isn’t our job. Let go of any strong urge to make things right and focus on seeing things right. Ask to see things differently, ask for a miracle!
I read a story recently about a little boy named Jamie Scott. He was trying out for a school play and had his heart set on getting it. His mother was afraid he might not be chosen and made sure she was there to pick him up from school the day the parts were awarded. Jamie ran excitedly to his mother with a big smile. “Guess what, Mom,” he shouted, and then said words that contain a lesson for all of us. “I’ve been chosen to clap and cheer.”
You have the power to make a difference. Attune to the positive and be prepared to clap and cheer. Know that you are part of the grand scheme to build a more positive world.
