Voting Your Spiritual Wisdom

By Willobei Eversole

As we move into the heart of this election season let us move from our hearts. Let us embrace and honor our spiritual essence. Let us value participation in the process of selecting those that will represent us (on a local, state and federal level) over the next few years. Let’s recall the spirit of hope that helped bring this nation to life.

It is through our individual and collective spiritual wisdom that we can elect a President and a Congress that are ready and willing to act with integrity and with respect for the spiritual principles on which this nation was founded. We can elect men and women who understand that they serve ALL the people of this nation.

Spirituality includes recognizing and nurturing a vision of our divine greatness and helping to bring that vision to life. We each came to this planet at this moment in history to be of service, to shine our light brightly and to move our planetary evolution another step forward. When we abdicate our missions, when we fail to act in ways that speak to our oneness, we open the door for those who would divide us.

Those that founded this nation held a deep spiritual vision of a democracy that was just, fair, moral, ethical, wise and egalitarian. When we accept less than full and honest representation from our elected representatives the spirit of our nation falters.

Can we envision a President and a Congress that willingly seek to understand a dynamic and changing world? Do we dare expect those who represent us to address the critical issues of our world today: pollution, poverty, AIDS, hunger, homelessness, conflict and misunderstanding with clear insight and spiritual wisdom? Can we expect those we elect to be receptive to partnering with us in a dynamic, open and real democracy?

I say we can and we must. If we desire elected representatives that express fairness, honesty, openness, compassion and trust we need to hold and live that vision in our own lives.

Holding the vision is important. If we believe in and act to foster freedom, justice, integrity, honesty and common sense in our lives, we will discover that our world shares those traits. A healthy society, a healthy world starts with us.

If we believe in the full richness of a democracy of, by and for the people—let us make it happen. We, as individuals, as a people and as a nation are much wiser and much more capable than some of our politicians are willing to admit.

In a few short weeks (campaign ads may make it seem longer) we will go to the polls. Let us elect those that reflect a true spirit of understanding and cooperation. Let us elect those that find peace more acceptable than war. Let us open our hearts to our inner spiritual wisdom and elect those that reflect the spirit of Oneness that is our ultimate truth.
