BIOLOGICAL MEDICINE
The New Frontier in Health Care
By Keli MacIntosh
In order to understand the biological approach to health one must first accept a different view of disease than that held by traditional medicine. “Biological Medicine is never about treating diseases,” but is mainly about supporting individuals during physical challenges, giving consideration to their differing constitutional types.
The above statements are the philosophy of Thomas M. Rau, M.D., medical director of the Paracelsus Klinik, Lustmuhle, Switzerland, the first clinic in Europe to integrate all natural healing methods with modern holistic therapies, metal-free dentistry, and a variety of detoxification methods.
“Bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms, which are commonly thought to be the causes of disease, develop within us. The internal milieu (environment) that we create for ourselves through our diet and lifestyles changes these microorganisms; and, by doing so, changes our predisposition to various diseases.” The belief behind the methods of practice at the Paracelsus Klinik is that if the balance of the human body is supported, this optimal physical state can actually prevent many diseases from developing. “It is important to note that every organ renews itself, even a diseased one!” We must recognize that we all have the amazing power to heal ourselves.
Unfortunately our reliance on medications and sophisticated technology has made us forget about the idea of actually taking care to stay healthy. So many people wait until after being diagnosed with some disease before they would even consider this approach.
People should be encouraged to take responsibility for the state of their health and to look at their body as an intricate machine with several related systems that need to be considered. “The patient is regarded as a whole being; we never consider only the diseased organ. We never treat the symptoms themselves but the obstructed functions and causes, which can lead to the appearance of the symptoms.” With Biological Medicine several factors are taken into consideration before deciding on a plan for therapy. And many types of treatments may be used simultaneously.
Several of these treatments are considered controversial and risky by established medicine. We often hear that if non-traditional methods are subjected to “scientific” testing, the studies show these holistic treatments to be ineffective. Dr. Rau explains that these studies “do not reflect the reality that the human being exists on a higher level than that which is statistically controllable with standardized studies.” Just because there is no scientific basis at this time to support treatments such as homeopathy and acupuncture, this does not make them unreliable. Their use is based on the evidence of having been tried and tested for generations. Ask yourself—How did people manage to stay alive before the rise in the use of pharmaceuticals and all our modern medical procedures? They concentrated on staying healthy and learned to work with their bodies!
Our present lifestyle—fast paced and eat on the run—in a subtly toxic environment, weakens the body and shifts the delicate interactions of vital systems involved in metabolic processes. And, to add insult to injury, we so often assume that symptoms of healing are indications of disease and take drugs to suppress them. This often actually prolongs the healing process; or worse, forces the underlying imbalance to surface in yet another way.
Biological Medicine’s basic approach to health is as follows:
- Human beings become ill because of toxic overload. Accumulations of toxins block the delicate regulation of our metabolic processes.
- Disease is the expression of the body’s inability to regulate itself and the resulting degeneration. Physical symptoms are a healthy expression of the body’s attempt to put itself back into balance. The suppression of symptoms interferes with our natural detoxification process, forcing the body to function in an unhealthy environment; thereby adding additional stress to an already compromised state.
- Disturbance foci trigger chronic diseases or make them worse.
- Inflammation, such as with endometriosis and irritable bowel syndrome or dental problems, can trigger chronic symptoms such as neuralgia, fatigue, and headaches, even if these problems have been unnoticed for years!
- All diseases are multi-causal and dependent on the constitution of the patient.
Our health condition is supported by many factors. Contrary to the thinking of traditional practitioners, the “cookbook” approach to treatment does not consider the whole person, only a single diagnosis. Addressing only one area of concern will not reestablish balance.
The Biological Medicine practitioner works with people to discover underlying causes of symptoms and imbalances. Sometimes people “just don’t feel right” but tests show nothing wrong. At this time one must dig for the deeper reasons behind the ill feeling.
The most frequent blockades to the regulation of the body are:
Heavy metals—an accumulation of metals obstruct chemical metabolic reactions.
Dental problems—dead teeth harbor toxins and bacteria which block immune functions and the activities of associated organs.
Dysbiosis of the intestines—the absence of normal bacteria in the intestinal tract allows for the growth of pathological microorganisms, including yeast and fungus. This overgrowth can affect the entire body.
Lack of trace minerals—these are vitally important building blocks for cellular reproduction. Just think of trying to build a house with only half of the required lumbar.
Protein overload and the resulting over-acidification of the body—too much protein intake increases the acidity of the body. An acid/base imbalance can interfere with absorption of necessary elements and life-sustaining metabolic processes.
Continued psychological stress—the body reacts to stress in a “fight or flight” manner; the long-term effect of this response produces wear and tear on the body.
Ingestion of chemicals/medications—these alter the functions of the body instead of supporting its natural activities.
So, if you are presently dealing with frustrating health challenges, discuss this Biological Medicine approach with your health care provider. Perhaps the two of you can find ways to support your body while using other recommended treatments. If you are fortunate enough to call yourself healthy, remember the need to support your body and enhance its ability to heal itself.
May your lifestyle be a healthy one!
