Support for the Spiritual Journey
By Jan Deremo Lundy
For many, the spiritual journey is a solitary one. As we search for a spirituality that is uniquely our own, often we are certain that there is no one who can understand the search we are on; no one is asking the same questions we are or feeling the same confusion or ecstasy we are feeling. It is true that no one can ‘do your journey’ for you, but it is a great misconception that we have to walk this path of awakening alone.
The Spiritual Formation Program through the Dominican Center in Grand Rapids is one of those resources that provides companionship and support for the journey through classes, spiritual direction and community. It’s nonsectarian ecumenical approach encourages seekers of all faiths to deeply explore the roots of Christian theology, the mystics and great spiritual writers (Francis of Assisi, John of the Cross, Meister Eckhart and more) and hear what wisdom they have to offer today. In locations throughout the region (Grand Rapids, Traverse City, and Muskegon in Michigan; Toledo and Akron in Ohio), the Center has implemented continuing programs to assist people in integrating their spirituality with their everyday lives. An additional benefit for those seeking college credit is that the “Foundations of Spirituality” course is accredited by Aquinas College. If you’ve always wanted to study the classics (and have some assistance in deciphering them), then this is indeed the program for you.
One exciting new aspect of its formation programs is an offering called “The Path to Integration.” Having listened to the call of seekers statewide, the Dominican Center now offers a series of classes which encourage people to explore life and their spirituality more holistically. Evenings are dedicated to Healing and Energy; T’ai Chi and Yoga; Eco-Spirituality; Sacred Movement, and more. The purpose of this program is to “explore and experience the integration of our physical body and spirituality.” The class meets once a month for ten months. A portable labyrinth is brought to each session; participants engage in contemplative prayer, journaling and group reflection.
Additional opportunities are also available for instruction/certification in Spiritual Companioning and Spiritual Direction.
Classes are forming now for the fall schedule in Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Traverse City. For further information or to receive brochures on the programs please call Anita Benes at the Dominican Center at 1-800-253-7343 ext. 162 or call (616) 643-0162; e-mail: abenes@dominicancenter.com
