Personal Life Coaching
By Charmaine "Charli" Schulman, Ph.D.
Personal life coaching as a profession has been around for many years. Coaching is the fastest growing profession in our country today as stated in magazines such as Time, Fortune, Start Up Entrepreneur, and “O”, Ophah’s monthly publication.
Clients will engage a personal life coach to assist them while working on setting goals and overcoming obstacles in their daily life. Personal coaching is a support system for people working to gain more quality and balance in their life.
Coaching is proven to work when two factors are present:
- There is a gap between where the client is now and where they want to be.
- The client is willing to grow.
That is all that is necessary for the coach and client to complete a specific task, or to create a whole new life. Coaching helps the client capitalize on their strengths and facilitate their growth, enhancing their personal lives. The coaching relationship is a designed alliance. You, the client are in charge, the program is always based on you getting the results you
want—on the terms you endorse. You are involved in creating a powerful relationship that fits your working and learning style. The focus is on achieving success, balance and fulfillment in your “entire” life. You and your coach will examine every commitment, goal and dream you have, and engage in an action plan that gets and keeps you in motion.
A coach is a unique blend of mentor, consultant, counselor, best friend and confidant. One who is non-judgemental listens to what is said and not said, and how you want to be coached. Asks questions, gives feedback, adds perspective, makes specific suggestions and requests, offers advice, tracks progress, provides reinforcement, and follow-through. Your coach will hone your vision, keep an unwavering eye on your goals and your progress, ask for your best, and hold you accountable.
The difference between therapy and personal coaching is therapy deals with psychological issues, usually rooted in the past. Coaches work with the present, future desires and dreams. A coach may, however, help a client to identify or articulate blocks or obstacles to gaining the desired results. This may be one way of acknowledging current realities. Coaches typically assist clients to discover their inner resources and alternatives which can reduce or eliminate such barriers.
Coaching is accomplished via telephone. With the knowledge that the client is in the safety of his own environment, they have a sense of ease and security, therefore speaking freely comes with little effort or discomfort. Another value to telephone sessions is that demographics does not hinder the client from availing himself to the service. Some personal life coaches will coach the client in general areas, others will specialize in one specific venue.
